Granite is a commonly found, coarse-grained, hard igneous rock consisting predominantly of quartz, microcline or orthoclase, and mica. The relative proportion of contrasting colored minerals in granite is highly due to the original source of molten rock that cooled and solidified to form the granite. If the molten rock was abundant in potassium feldspar, the granite is more likely to have a salmon pink color. Additionally, if the molten rock is abundant in quartz and minerals that make up amphibole, it is more likely get black and white speckled granite commonly seen on countertops.
